After the major Panda and Penguin updates that rocked the SEO industry, and now the mobile update that turned the mobile rankings upside down in April 2015, many people are asking if it’s still possible to be profitable in local SEO. The question though should be, did it become easier?
Well, the answer is that it became easier since spammers’ tactics will not work anymore, allowing for white hat SEO marketers to rank better. Here are a few pointers that they all have been using in order to be successful in their local SEO efforts.
1 – Make sure your home page has enough content on it.
Brian Lewis told us “A major SEO ranking factor is for your home page to have a lot of content in it. This is especially the case if you’re trying to rank with a one-page site, such as a product page, and you don’t have much on that website. Google’s ranking metrics is signaling off sites which have weak, skinny content pages, that also are 1 page and have no other content on their website. So having a established home page is a must.”
2 – Your pages should have more than a few sentences.
Keyword spamming tactics which sought to just create pages optimized for specific keywords used to work a lot in the past. Nowadays though, if you post a page with relevant content on keywords that people used those tactics, you ought to outrank them very easily. The same serves for you as a heads up to strengthen your pages’ PR by adding more content to them, especially if they’ve got only little content on them right now.
3 – Don’t spam keywords within your content.
Keyword density is a thing of the past. It’s enough now to just have the keyword once in the title, URL, and a few times within the content itself. Also, the relevancy of the site to the content itself really plays a key role in allowing your page to rank better in the search engines.
4 – Make sure your title tag includes your keyword along with your city and state.
As mentioned before, your H1 heading which is the title, should always have the keyword in it. If targeting local SEO rankings, always also add the city and state which you are targeting that content for.
5 – Include the city and state in the h1 heading.
As mentioned in step 4, always include the city and state. It’s mandatory to emphasize this since forgetting this rule will not allow you to rank better for local search terms.
6 – Include the city and state in the content.
You also have to include the city and the state within the content itself. This gives a green flag to Google’s ranking metrics to rank your site or page/s better for that particular term in a given location.
7 – Include the city and state in the alt text on the image.
Also, a very sneaky trick that has done wonders. By adding the the city and state to the alt text of images on the page, many search engine optimization marketers have seen great PR benefits.
8 – Include the city and state in the URL.
And local SEO also goes all the way to the top, by inserting the city and state within the URL.
